Homeschool Opportunities

                                                                   Homeschool Partnership Basics

Oaktree Academy Homeschoolers come under the legal homeschool covering of Oaktree Academy.  Once you have registered with Oaktree Academy, there is nothing further you need to do to register with the state.  If you were previously registered in the state of Virginia through a local school district, you do not need to contact them to change your covering though it is certainly fine to do so.  Should they contact you for information, you may tell them that you are now part of a private school.  If they require any further information, please instruct them to call our office.

As a homeschooling family under the covering of Oaktree Academy your responsibilities are as follows:

1.     Complete the Oaktree OAH application (one per student) in full.  Pay the $150 per family per year fee.

2.     Supply the Oaktree Office with a yearly curriculum/course content list for every subject for each child you are homeschooling.  This list should be submitted before the start of school each year.

3.     Submit semester grades for each child you homeschool.  We require grades in particular for our middle school and high school students because we participate in sports with many different types of schools, and grades are one standard for assessing a student’s eligibility to play a sport.  In addition, the requirement to submit grades helps you as a homeschooling family, prepare your child’s transcript if needed.  We ask that grades be submitted to us in a numerical format (i.e. 94 rather than A). Oaktree uses a grading scale as follows: A = 94 - 100, B = 86 - 93, C = 78 - 85, D = 70 - 77, F = 0 - 69.  We do, however, understand that some homeschooling families choose not to grade their students in the lower grades in certain subjects.  If you choose not to grade your child in a particular subject, please indicate that as you submit the semester grades for that child.

4.     Test your child each year and submit the test scores to the Oaktree Office.  Testing is offered at Oaktree Academy each year in the spring.  Your children are welcome to participate in our testing days (see the section outlining testing below).

As a homeschooling family under OAH, you are entitled to participate in many of the activities of the Academy.  For instance…

1.     You are, of course, welcomed to enroll your child in any of the courses offered at Oaktree.  Homeschoolers will be allowed to register for classes after our full and part-time students have had the opportunity to enroll.
2.     Your children may participate on any of the sports teams offered at Oaktree.  Your child will be required to meet all requirements expected of students enrolled in the Academy and you will need to pay the same fee they are charged.  Currently that fee is $60 per sport.
3.     Your child may participate in any of the clubs offered at the Academy.  There will be no entrance fee, but there may be supply fees charged as necessary.  Your child will be required to come to the Academy in dress code for these events (see the student handbook for dress code information).
4.     You and your children will be permitted to attend any of the Oaktree IMPACT events planned for the school year.  Again, there is no charge to you except for charges that apply to all students who plan to attend.  These charges would include entrance fees to specific sites, etc.
5.     Your children may participate in Oaktree’s prom and graduation ceremony. Again, there is no additional charge to you outside the fees we charge all students for these events.
6.     Your children may enroll in testing at the Academy each spring.  The cost to you for 2007-08 will be $50 per child (grades 3, 5, 6, 7, 9, 10) for the IOWA survey and $85 for all children in grades 4, 8 and 11, for the IOWA full battery.  We do offer a make-up testing day for families who can not make the originally scheduled test dates, however, the costs for that test date are much higher due to the fact that those tests must be hand-scored.
7.     Parents of our OAH students are welcome to attend any informational and training events we offer to parents.  These events will be announced via email and bulletin boards within the school.
8.     You and your children may use the Oaktree Library.

We are so pleased to be able to offer this homeschooling option for families who desire it.  We are always open to ways to further help our homeschooling families.  Please let us know how we can help.
